Part of Stormchasers, a curated exhibition of fourteen storm works selected from nearly fifty paintings made across seven years of wild weather.
Dusk Sketch introduces another coastline and another rhythm of weather into the exhibition. Smaller and more reflective than the hero works, it adds a quieter, atmospheric note without losing the charged surface language of the show. In the white float frame it reads almost like a held breath inside the broader roar of the exhibition.

Old Harry Rocks, Studland is usually a gentler coastline, monumental rather than feral, but the evening this was painted it revealed a wilder face. As I worked, ramblers passing by told me they had never seen the place look so stormy. I worked to catch the movement of the sea below as the light fell and visibility began to disappear. By the end, the coastline was slipping into darkness, while thousands of distant lights stretched along the horizon towards Bournemouth, Southampton and beyond. It was dusk turning theatrical, with the sea still moving beneath it all.
