Creative Nature

from creative curiosity to artistic adventure

Welcome to ‘Creative Nature’, a structured and supportive 4 week art course which will transform the way you see the world and catapult the joy and quality of your art.

This isn’t a course which will teach you how to draw a particular subject in a particular medium, be it how to draw a face, or a frog, or a flower; in oils, or pastels, or watercolour. This course is packed with 100’s of techniques distilling 20 years professional experience with over 1500 students to teach you how really look at the world around you and then how to capture it in any medium. This course is about seeing and the fundamental principles and processes of making art. It will give you the tools and confidence to paint whatever uniquely fascinates and excites you in this world, whilst having buckets of fun in the process.

This course Contains:

four structured modules covering

1) drawing, sketching and composition

2) mark-making techniques

3) approaches to colour mixing

4) working plein-air and applying viscocities.

weekly in-depth teaching videos (35 – 50 mins) providing demonstrations, tips, ideas and activities for each of the modules. Watch or download any of these videos to recap or return to at any time at your leisure.

a dedicated private group throughout the course where everyone can share work resulting from the weeks activities and receive continuous personalised feedback and suggestions for progression.

an in-person, half day workshop in Brixham at the end of the course to ask questions, watch live demonstrations and consolidate all the learning from the course.

I learned so much every week from Joe’s online art course. He has an engaging and enthusiastic approach, an infectious love of painting and he is a natural teacher. The videos were bursting with information - I needed to make notes each week in order to retain everything. I have been painting for three or four years and have a fairly confident grasp of colour theory, but never have I advanced so much in terms of my knowledge of composition, the application of paint and the building up of layers. ‘Creative Nature’ is Joe Webster’s flagship art course distilling his 15 years’ experience as a professional art teacher. Through his expertise of teaching over 1500 students Joe developed his distinctive method to support students’ progress beyond common creative challenges to unlock the joy, excitement and ease of creating artwork.

Creative Nature is an accessible and rigorously structured course. Regardless of an artist’s knowledge or expertise it’s essential to regularly practice the fundamental elements of drawing and composition. These are presented through supportive and comprehensive exercises throughout each module. The course gently progresses through tasks of increasing complexity such as mark-making colour-mixing through to advanced painting techniques designed to supportively challenge and inspire each participant regardless of skill level, to explore and play with exciting new ideas and approaches to painting.

Joe provides a clear and structured approach to developing skills and confidence alongside his naturally gentle, positive and supportive character.

“In my career I commonly hear phrases such as ‘I can only draw stick-men’ or that ‘a teacher once told me that I’m no good at art and I’ve believed it ever since.’ Through my extensive experience I have witnessed, and firmly believe everyone is creative and can learn ‘to do art’. Like all skills it requires structured teaching and application from the student.

So, the key question is

  • Do you dream of ‘loosening up your style’?
  • ‘Is art something you enjoy (or you’d like to enjoy)?’
  • ‘Would you like support to get started or to develop your skills and confidence further?’

If so then

come and join us championing our creative nature and unlock the joy of self-expression whilst finding peace and connection with nature and the great outdoors.

I was an uninspired and possibly sad person as I so desperately want to paint for enjoyment and not feel negative. Joe was truly inspirational, kind and so willing to share his expertise. He spent a long time preparing videos which were so good and made me take up the pencil and brushes again... I would thoroughly recommend doing a course with Joe and am so looking forward to perhaps doing a live workshop with him in the near future. Lisa Fitzgerald 2022

2022 participant’s work:

I loved learning more about the tricks the artist can use to gain specific effects and being reminded that the artist's canvas is whatever they want it to be - that rules are there to be broken.
The most valuable thing for me was the feedback; Joe’s critique of your work is positive and encouraging. He suggests, but he never controls. He helps you to use your eyes differently and to think in new ways. In my observation of landscape, I now know what to seek out, what to notice, what to emphasise and, theoretically at least, how to incorporate my observations into my work. I’ve been inspired anew to go out and practise, to take risks and not to look for perfection. Claire Kilpatrick 2022

Dear Joe, I wanted to write to thank you for your help and inspiration last Wednesday. The painting of the echiums continues to astonish me and those who see it. I think you pushed me into doing something special and I am most grateful to you. Margaret McIntyre
