Part of Stormchasers, a curated exhibition of fourteen storm works selected from nearly fifty paintings made across seven years of wild weather.
One of the strongest Welcombe paintings in the exhibition, Engulfed captures the foamy, jagged force of the sea at close quarters. Painted on cradled board, it combines storm energy with a more resistant surface, allowing finer structure to hold inside the turbulence.

This piece was painted with high adrenaline at the end of a 3 day plein-air painting trip at a wintery Welcome Mouth in North Devon. Having spent three highly successful days creating a body of work we woke on the last day (with the plan to have breakfast and head home) to discover a dramatic haze of morning sea mist and a wild foamy sea contrasting with the jagged black cliff. I raced down to the beach and captured this piece in a frenzy to translate some of the amazing, dramatic energy before the sun rose and the scene calmed down.
