Part of Stormchasers, a curated exhibition of fourteen storm works selected from nearly fifty paintings made across seven years of wild weather.
Something Went Crack has a slightly darker, more fractured energy, as if the whole surface is registering a split-second of impact.
Together with Engulfed, it forms a pair within the exhibition’s Welcombe story: sea-force, collision, and the physical drama of the coast.

This piece was painted with high adrenaline at the end of a 3 day plein-air painting trip at a wintery Welcombe Mouth in North Devon. Having spent three highly successful days creating a body of work we woke on the last day (with the plan to have breakfast and head home) to discover a dramatic haze of morning sea mist and a wild foamy sea contrasting with the jagged black cliff. I raced down to the beach and captured this piece in a frenzy to translate some of the amazing, dramatic energy before the sun rose and the scene calmed down.
